Classes are for adults over the age of 18 only.
I have been teaching comics recently via the Mount Airy Learning Tree (MALT) located in northwest Philadelphia. Classes are held at the Blair Christian Academy (220 West Upsal Street, 19119) 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Classes range from 5 to 10 students. The class is canceled if fewer than (a minimum of) 5 students sign up.
If you are interested in attending one of my classes it's best to get on my mailing list for email announcements (sent as early as two months before the class is officially announced). Please email me on the ABOUT / CONTACT page to get on the mailing list if you are interested in the BASIC or INTERMEDIATE class. There is no obligation to sign up, but if there is a possibility you may be interested, please let me know.
The class is 10 minutes by car from Roxborough, Chestnut Hill and Germantown and 25 minutes from City Hall in Center City to the south and Jenkintown to the north. SEPTA busses go to the area and a commuter rail station is located a 5 minuite walk away from the Blair Christian Academy.
MALT's Fall 2019 semester is October through December. My COMICS BASICS classes would occupy five Thursdays - 7:00pm to 9:00pm. In the future, I may teach one class or the other or both depending on level of interest.
Great comics aren't based on how well you can draw but on how well you can communicate in pictures. This class will give you the basic building blocks of comics from creating characters to writing stories for them. Tools and techniques will also be covered. We will read and discuss a selection of comics in the beginning of each class and focus on aspects of comics and student's projects for the remainder. Students will work on producing a minicomic as a project over the length of the course.
Please bring: large ringed sketchbook - 9"x 12" or 12" x 14," pencils (#2 are fine); rubber, plastic or gum eraser; some of your comics if you have them.
Five classes - 2 hours per class - $99.00

Have you always wanted to make a comic story but get hug-up on the details? This class will give you the skills to make comics with techniques that develop your ideas into a blended coherent comic story of words and pictures with the goal of producing your own minicomic and possibly publication. We will read, discuss, and deconstruct several comic stories by master cartoonists in the beginning of each class and students will receive individual attention tailored to their specific ideas and abilities for the remainder of class.
For students who have taken my "Comics & Cartooning Basics" class or have already done comics on their own that would like to learn new skills and refine what they already know about comics. Students will be doing a lot of writing and drawing so it is best to have a basic ability in both.
Please bring: large ringed sketchbook - 9"x 12" or 12" x 14," pencils; rubber, plastic or gum eraser; and some of your own comics if you have them.
